New WAY to value MS gold $20 pieces
Just a minor observation which some may find interesting.
Back in 2003: EF $20 regular Saint $500 PCGS prices Back then a MS63 $780 Back then a MS64 $950 Back then a MS65 $1750 Back then a MS66 $3300 ************************************************ Now: EF is $870 MS63 is $975 MS64 is $1125 MS65 is $1625 MS66 is $3250 ************************************************ Can't argue with the market so I guess that the FLOOD of $50 US Mint coins is having a dirrect effect on the 80% of the COLLECTING market. I guess. You can buy a perfect gold proof one-ounce coin for $800 from the mint; or PR70 for about a grand from a good coin store. ************************************************* Keep this in mind and remember the JEWEL MS64 and MS65 "just ain't the clout, price, or class, they USED to be! |
Re: New WAY to value MS gold $20 pieces
I picked up a graded MS62 Gaudens not so long ago from a guy who I usually get bullion from. I didn't want it but he gave it to me for 40 bucks more than a bullion coin. Is that grading useless on a coin like this HistoryStudent?

There are a couple of variations of 1908 but, generally, PCGS (whose prices he was quoting, we don't have NCG price quotes) have it at $920 ((unless its got a motto "In God We Trust" on it - or a D with the date.........then its $975, but I suspect yours does not.)) My personal feeling is - whenever one can get a graded coin for near spot or the same price as bullion, you really can not lose. HISTORY - In looking at your list - what confuses me is that you are generalizing all MS 62 or MS 63, or MS whatever, as if they ALL are valued the same regardless of year. Some years are more valuable - because they are rarer - than others........so I am not disputing your list - I am merely wondering where it came from and how they compared, say, a 1909 MS 63 at $3400, or 1909-D at $8400, or 1908-D No Motto at $20,000, with something like a 1910-D MS 63 at $925??? Both are MS 63 but they are not valued anywhere close to the same! |

It's a NO MOTTO, no D.

The dealer told me It was a 700 dollar coin when Gold was trading around 620 dollars. Thanks for checking Master Ho.

According to your chart....
(where'd you get the prices, by the way?) ....63's and 64's increase in value the best, percentage-wise..... |
Re: New WAY to value MS gold $20 pieces
Hey, History Student:
Not sure which year or mint mark you are comparing prices, as Master Ho said, but assuming the you were comparing the same coin (year, mint mark and grade) then I would say the price increase for grade of EF would be due to less of them available on the market to buy, whereas the grades of MS62 & 63 are flooded. Supply and demand. What do you think Master Ho? |

Without knowing where the prices came from and what they are comparing - its really difficult to know what to think. And I am not sure if a certain coin flooded at a higher grade would make a lower grade with less coins available worth more......tho I suppose it could, can't rule it out. Also - if the prices were for one coin only - its possible the price for that coin in certain grades changed as noted but other coins might not. Maybe more of that year were found recently, but again, without the background on the chart, its impossible to say. But somewhere I read something that was saying that, with the Buffalo and 20th anniversary of the eagles in gold and silver, the demand for older coins was down a bit this year. That implied it was a temporary supply and demand situation, and that the older coins in MS 64 and 65 were down a bit and a better buy now, and that htis was a good time to buy the oldr coins because, in the next couple of years, they would go back up again. But I am still waiting for History to come back and give us the background on the original post prices. |
